Venn Diagram Templates

The Venn diagram, first introduced by John Venn in 1880, is a form of diagram used to represent the relationship between two or more concepts visually. Venn diagrams can be used for various fields of study, especially mathematics. A circle in a Venn diagram represents a set of elements. The area where the circles intersect is used to describe two or more concepts that are commonly possessed by the elements displayed. The intersecting area is known as “intersection” while the area that contains no elements is called the “empty set”.

How to make a Venn diagram

  1. Determine the concepts to be compared. Write a title that describes what will be compared at the top.
  2. Make a circle for each subject to be compared. Each circle must intersect with at least one other circle.
  3. Label each circle. Write the name of the topic that represents each circle near or inside each circle. To maintain readability, avoid writing the names of topics in the neighboring circles. Conversely, to make Venn diagrams easy to read, write information in font colors that are different from the background.
  4. Enter unique characteristics for each element that are compared that do not exist in other elements.
  5. Enter the same characteristics between the elements being compared in the circle overlapping the two / more elements in question.

What SHOULD be in a Venn diagram template

1. Option to create 2-circle, 3-circle, 4-circle, Venn diagrams and other more complicated shapes

A good Venn diagram template allows you to change Venn diagrams from 2-circle Venn diagrams to 3-circle, 4-circle, even to more complicated shapes. This shows that the template is flexible and that you no longer have to worry about having to find a new template to accommodate your data.

2. Has a universal design that can be used for various fields of study

As previously explained, Venn diagrams can be used to visually represent data from various fields of study. In order to optimise your time to search for templates, stick to the universal template design that allows you to modify the diagram for various fields of study. Certain templates are indeed more interesting to be used to describe data from certain fields. For example, templates with floral background images are more suitable for presenting data for biological field of study, and templates with building backgrounds / accents may only be suitable for displaying data in business field of study.

3. Has easy drag-and-drop elements

If you are a busy person and not an expert operating a graphic design application, of course you want a template that is “ready to use”. Choose a template that accommodates your needs, which is a template made with the non-designer in mind.

What SHOULD NOT be in a Venn diagram template

1. Having an excessive and tedious design

Your presentation must have a professional tone. Don’t use excessive templates so that the components of Venn diagrams such as intersection, union, symmetric difference, relative complement, absolute complement, and universal set are not apparent.

2. Don’t have supporting images

Although not required, Venn diagrams that are not equipped with supporting visuals such as images or icons are tedious and lacking in highlighting the message you want to convey.

3. Does not have good resolution when printed or shared with other media

Templates with low resolution will look blurry when printed on paper. The template will also be difficult to share with other media such as Word, PDF, or online media such as Dropbox and Google Docs.
